After England's exit to reigning world champions France in the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup 2022, captain Harry Kane claimed responsibility. The French defeated England 2-1 at Al Khor on Sunday and advanced to the semifinals of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 thanks to strikes from Aurelien Tchouameni and Olivier Giroud. Kane could have scored the equalizer in the dying minutes through a penalty, but it was a miss he may regret. Kane stated that a World Cup occurs every four years. It is a long time to wait. But I am proud of the boys. They had a great camp, and an outstanding World Cup, which I am taking responsibility for. Despite the outcome, he said, he is not concerned about the team and how it will affect them. We've got some great talent. It'll hurt, not just for me, but for everyone involved, but that's football, that's a sport. Sometimes, you have to take things in stride and move forward."
As part of his remarks, England manager Gareth Southgate offered his support to captain Harry Kane, who missed a penalty that cost his team a semifinal berth. The team wins and loses together, and we have let a few goals in and missed a few opportunities. I have been extremely pleased with Harry's performance and he has been so consistent for us. We would not be here if it were not for the number of goals he scored," Southgate said in an interview. "Getting a second penalty and facing a goalkeeper who knows you so well (both Kane and Lloris are Tottenham Hotspur players), so that situation is very difficult. Although he is the best, he will miss at times. That is football. Nobody I would rather have in such a scenario, and I would feel the same way if we had one tomorrow." "He has made a great contribution to this team throughout this tournament, and I thought that his performance tonight was his best," concluded the coach.
Although Southgate has two more years remaining on his contract, he indicated that he would need some time to "review and reflect" after the World Cup. "As part of our tournament preparation process, we review and reflect after each tournament. As a result, we need some time to make sure everyone makes the right decisions," said Southgate. "I have always had to take some time to make decisions after these tournaments due to the emotional rollercoaster that occurs during these matches. It takes enormous energy to participate in these tournaments," he stated.
