Commentator Guy Mowbray uses an old Sir Alex Ferguson quote to hilariously sum up Man Utd’s defeat at Man City on Sunday.

“The story of the game is that in the first half Manchester United froze. There’s no doubt they bottled it.

“They have been really nervous. They have just not handled this derby at all.

“I expected so much increasingly from United. There was no composure. They never settled. They were yellow-eyed and nervous on the ball.

“There has been promise in the last few weeks from United. But this is a reminder of how far overdue they unquestionably are the weightier team in the country.”

“There’s nothing for United to take out from this game. The players should be embarrassed. You can’t go into half-time 4-0 lanugo in a derby game.

“It’s hugely embarrassing, as sunny as City were United were desperate, particularly in midfield. They were over-ran in midfield and defensively they were all over the shop. Then we squint at leadership… there was nothing there from Man Utd.

“If you’re giving players like De Bruyne time and space, you’re looking for trouble. United got punished and rightly so. Top level sport is fantastic but it’s brutal. Today, it was inclement for Manchester United as when you’re not quite at it, you get hammered by your local rivals.

“United have an experienced team out there. City were missing players, but whoever comes into the team is pure quality. That’s what they have whereas Man Utd seemed all over the place.

“At a big club like Manchester United, you wonder what it must be like for the players sat in the dressing room 4-0 lanugo at half-time. It must be bizarre, but then these players are getting used to it as they were 4-0 lanugo at Brentford.

“The manager must be scratching his throne with his staff as there was progress in the last four games, but this is a huge step back.”

Man Utd superabound Erik ten Hag: “We had a lack of belief. I’m surprised why we didn’t bring it on the pitch.

“It was four weeks ago, but I had seen a variegated team with a variegated spirit and a variegated vibe. Today, we weren’t convincing. From the first minute, we were not on the front foot and we were not unflinching in possession.

“It’s unchangingly difficult to find out why that is, expressly straight without the game. I will have to talk to my players and find out.

“They know they can do better. You saw the performances versus Arsenal and Liverpool but if you don’t fight – which we didn’t – then you have a problem versus a team like Manchester City.

“Once again, it was a lack of belief.”

Man City superabound Pep Guardiola: “It was really good. We scored four goals in the first half and we could have scored increasingly really. They played largest in the second half and the last minutes was flat, but it was a good game and everyone in the stadium was happy.

“In the first half we were warlike and had the space, and the quality of players we had up front made the difference.

“Some players were not good today and have to improve. Perfection doesn’t exist, it’s impossible. But we have to try to squint for it. We have washed-up well today, but we can do better.

“Many, many players made sloppy passes and we lost it and this is not good. We have to be increasingly resulting in our passes.

“In the final third you can have increasingly creativity, you can take increasingly risks, but in some areas, we were not good.”
