THE PLAYERS' DISSATISFACTION WITH QATAR'S WORLD CUP IS EXPLAINED BY BRUNO FERNANDEZ
According to Fernandes, the World Cup should be conducted in a more efficient manner, criticizing the timing of the event and raising the issue of Qatar's treatment of migrant workers.
The Manchester United duo of Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen questioned the decision to hold the World Cup in Qatar just minutes after finishing the last Premier League match before the tournament began. Fernandes criticized the timing of the World Cup as well as Qatar's treatment of migrant workers. Because of the scorching heat in the summer months, the Qatar World Cup is taking place next weekend rather than June-July.
Furthermore, Qatar has been under intense scrutiny for its treatment of hundreds of thousands of migrant workers who have been employed in the tiny emirate since the World Cup hosting rights were awarded 12 years ago. In accordance with Amnesty International, dozens might have died from apparent heat stroke. Similarly, Qatar's views on homosexuality have been strongly criticized and Fernandes' comments suggest that players will not hesitate to speak out about issues as the tournament approaches.
The public should be aware of the circumstances surrounding the World Cup, what has happened over the past few weeks, past few months, as well as the deaths that have occurred during the construction of the stadiums. That is not at all acceptable to us. ... Because a World Cup is the world, we want football to be for everyone. Everyone should be included and involved in a World Cup. It is open to all, regardless of who they are. “A World Cup is more than football, it's a party for fans and players. Considering how much fun it can be to watch, it should be done better. After recovering from cardiac arrest during a game at last year's European Championship, Eriksen will play for Denmark in Qatar. Bruno is right. I totally agree. Qatar's hosting of the World Cup and how it came about to have received a lot of attention.” Eriksen said, “everyone agrees it wasn't done properly. Our profession is football, so we play football. Politics has to do with something above us in order to make that decision. It is of course our intention to say what we believe and does what we can. Despite our desire to focus on it, the change must come from somewhere else.”
