MESSI OR RONALDO: WHO IS THE BETTER PLAYER? THIS IS A DEBATE GOING ON IN QATAR ABOUT.

By Rashmi Goel

There was no stopping the constant debate over who was the better player, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, despite the fact that Thursday was a rest day at the World Cup. Due to the lack of games in Doha for the second consecutive day, fans flocked to the Souk Waqif to shop and sightsee, while the decade-long debate about who was the GOAT - the "greatest of all time", went on in the city's cafes and restaurants, while no games were being held in Doha. There were plenty of fans in the souk who cheered on Argentina, who play the Netherlands in their quarter-final World Cup match on Friday, and Portugal, who play Morocco in their quarter-final World Cup match on Saturday, in the narrow streets and squares, in addition to plenty of neutrals as well.

In the course of the past decade, Messi and Ronaldo, who are 35 years old and two years older respectively, have dominated one of football's most polarising debates, especially when they were rivals at Barcelona and Real Madrid. It is their fifth World Cup in the history of the game, but neither player has won the trophy in their World Cup career. During their glittering careers, it is the only major award that has eluded them, and if they don't achieve it, this could be their last chance to win it. A number of Ronaldo's die-hard fans have been forced to rethink their position following the Portuguese team's 6-1 thrashing of Switzerland yesterday, as a result of Ronaldo's benching in the match. If both of the greats are up against each other in the finals, there can only be one sure way to decide whose legacy will be the greatest since they are both in the twilight of their careers.
